About the Exhibition

The main goal of the project is to explore the connections between Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Nigeria and Myanmar by fostering dialogue between photographers and visualising their stories, experiences and reflections on shared challenges.

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 exposed global connections between countries and continents, highlighting the extent of their interdependence. Events occurring thousands of kilometres away feel much closer due to their far-reaching impact. Not all cause-and-effect relationships are visible or covered by the media; however, the big war in Ukraine has made it clear that this is a world war, despite hostilities taking place in only two countries.

According to researchers of the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, there were 78 conflicts worldwide at the beginning of 2024. Analysis by the Peace Research Institute Oslo has shown that the past three years were the most violent in the last three decades.
Statistics, however, provide little insight into specific contexts and do not take into account local tensions within societies. Numbers alone are nameless and abstract, unable to evoke empathy and interest in events that have no direct impact on daily life. It is only when people experience conflict up close that they feel compelled to understand its complexities and want to know who is harming or killing whom.

The project ‘Beyond the Silence’ turns to photography in an attempt to find a communication format that can convey genuine stories and show the connections and consequences of actions taken by authorities and individuals across the globe. The artists create a space for shared observation and reflection, looking for answers to pressing questions.

Artists

At Jam Factory Art Center, we present the whole project featuring 12 artists — open call winners from 5 countries and Magnum photographers.

Sasha Kurmaz (Ukraine) – Daniel Orlando Lara Garcia (Mexico) – Rafal Milach (Poland, Magnum Photos),

Ira Lupu (Ukraine) – Fawaz Oyediji (Nigeria) – Newsha Tavakolian (Iran, Magnum Photos),
Daria Svertilova (Ukraine) – Sai ▇▇▇ (Myanmar) – Antoine d’Agata (France, Magnum Photos),

Mykhaylo Palinchak (Ukraine) – Yadykar Ibraimov (Kazakhstan) – Thomas Dworzak (Germany, Magnum Photos).

Themes

Themes that the photographers worked on: ‘Territory’, ‘Fight and/or Adaptation’, ‘Kidnapping’ and ‘Censorship’. The artists focus on problems that exist in all countries, differing only in context and ways to solve them. Through visual projects (photos and videos), we are able to see stories of struggle or illegally annexed territories and learn about the fates of people kidnapped in different parts of the world.
