On August 5 at 6:30 PM, Jam Factory Art Center will screen The Conformist (1970) — one of the most acclaimed films by Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci, based on the novel of the same name by Alberto Moravia. A landmark of world cinema, the film masterfully combines psychological drama, political thriller, and extraordinary visual storytelling.
Can the desire to be “normal” become more dangerous than one’s own convictions?
Set in Italy on the eve of the Second World War, the film follows Marcello Clerici, a man driven by a single desire: to blend in and be “like everyone else.” This longing leads him to serve the Fascist regime and take part in the planned assassination of his former professor, now an anti-fascist living in exile. Beneath his outward conformity, however, lies a man consumed by fear, trauma, and deep inner conflict.
The Conformist is more than a story about Fascism—it is a profound exploration of conformity itself, asking why people willingly surrender their freedom in order to meet society’s expectations. At the same time, the film is regarded as one of the most visually stunning works in cinema history. Vittorio Storaro’s breathtaking cinematography, masterful use of light and shadow, and meticulously composed frames have influenced generations of filmmakers.
