About the film
The story follows the family of 20-year-old Andriy Suleyman. Together with his parents, the main character escapes from Syria. However, the war catches up with him again in Ukraine, where Andriy becomes a volunteer with the Red Cross. After his father’s death, he decides to return his body to their homeland…
“This Rain Will Never Stop” is a co-production between Ukraine, Latvia, Germany, and Qatar, created with the support of the Ukrainian State Film Agency.
Premiere and Awards
The world premiere took place at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), where it received the award for Best First Appearance. IDFA is the world’s largest event dedicated to documentary cinema.
The film was also widely recognized in Ukraine. It received a special Human Rights Award from the independent platform Current Time at the 18th Docudays UA International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival, where it had its national premiere. The film was named Best Documentary of 2021 by the Ukrainian Film Critics Association (“Kinokolo” Awards).
In 2023, it won Best Documentary Film, and cinematographer Viacheslav Tsvietkov received the Best Cinematography award at the 6th Ukrainian Film Academy Awards “Golden Dzyga.”
About the director
Alina Gorlova is a documentary and fiction film director and editor. Her works include “Cold Yar. Intro,” “Invisible Battalion,” and “Babushka.”
The film is screened in its original languages (Kurdish, Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic, German) with Ukrainian subtitles.
After the screening, there will be a short discussion where you can share your impressions.
