The history of the “artes” group, as well as of the Lviv community of avant-garde artists still remains in the shadows of Ukrainian art scene. The association was founded in Lviv in the end of 1929, after the return of the young and radically minded Lviv artists from Fernand Léger’s Académie Moderne, as well as other European centers. Artists from different Lviv communities have joined the group. Among them were Poles, Ukrainians and Jewish people. Its creation and activity were intertwined with world art centers – particularly, Paris. Jerzy Janisch, Ludwik Lille, Roman and Magrit Selski (they were the only ones who stayed in Lviv after the war), Henryk Streng, Aleksander Krzywoblocki, Pavlo Kovzhun, Tadeusz Wojcechowski and others were among the group members. The history and heritage of the “artes” association is now a shared legacy of Ukrainian and Polish cultures.
