About the Seminar
Over the course of two sessions, we will watch and discuss various performance works, explore the body, presence, time, space, and interaction with the audience, and learn to analyse performance not only as an “art form,” but also as a situation in which something happens between people.
Through works by artists and performers, participants will become familiar with the key concepts of performance studies and explore the following questions: What exactly do we see when we watch a performance, and what role do we play in it?
Seminar objectives:
- To explore different forms of performance art—from artistic actions and endurance performances to works that engage the audience or incorporate installation, text, everyday actions, and social situations.
- To examine the key concepts of performance studies: the body, presence, audience, space, time, action, interaction, and participation. We will also discuss how an artwork changes when the audience is no longer merely an observer.
- To learn to think through personal experience. Through short practical exercises, participants will explore some of these concepts firsthand and articulate their own responses to performance—not necessarily as the “correct interpretation,” but as a way of investigating what is taking place.
The seminars will be led by Valeriia Buradzhiieva, curator of the Performative Programme.
The seminar is part of the 2026 Performative Programme by thesteinstudio × Jam Factory Art Center.
