“Varta1, Lviv, Ukraine” by Yuriy Hrytsyn is an essay film, an attempt to reconstruct the atmosphere and reactions at the end of Euromaidan, when activists took over the function of law enforcement in Lviv after the Night of Rage (February 19, 2014).
The film uses recordings of radio conversations between activists’ car patrols to pose several questions about the nature of the revolution. What is self-organization? How is democracy created? Who determines punishment? Where are the center and periphery of the revolution? Where is its beginning and end?
The film was recognized as the best Ukrainian festival film of 2015 by the Bureau of Ukrainian Film Journalism, received a special mention at the International Human Rights Film Festival Docudays UA 2016 and won the FIPRESCI International Film Press Federation Award at the Odesa International Film Festival in 2016.
The screening will be followed by a discussion.
