This is a documentary in the form of a video essay. It is a delicate, hypnotic journey through the video archive of the director’s father, a figure skater with the Ukrainian “Ballet on Ice” ensemble that toured abroad in the 80s and 90s. Using these cassette recordings, his daughter recreates an extraordinary story of growing up: her own, her family’s, and her society’s in Ukraine.
“Fragments of Ice” captures both the broad flow of history and its impact on the lives of real people up until the new shock of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The film won the main award in the DOCU/UKRAINE competition, the Special Mention in the DOCU/WORLD competition, the main award of the Student Jury and the award from the jury of the Ukrainian Union of Film Critics at the Docudays UA Human Rights Documentary Film Festival. “Fragments of Ice” also received the Kinokolo Film Critics Award in the category of Best Feature Documentary, and its director Maria Stoyanova won the Discovery of the Year Award.
