On September 5 at 4:00 PM, Jam Factory Art Center will host a conversation between Yuliia Pivtorak and Yaryna Shumska, “Theory and Practice of Action: Performance in Lviv’s Landscape.”
What remains when an action comes to an end? How do specific artistic interventions in Lviv’s urban space coexist with performance theory, and where can their traces be found in the city’s landscape? Why do some events become iconic and permanently transform the urban context, while others pass unnoticed?
The conversation will explore the ontological “elusiveness” of performance, its interaction with urban space, and methodologies for archiving ephemeral artistic actions.
Yuliia Pivtorak is a cultural studies scholar, lecturer at the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU), and researcher of Ukrainian art history. She is a graduate of the Cultural Studies program at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and the Performance Studies program at New York University. She also completed a research fellowship at the Institute of Art History at Adam Mickiewicz University with the support of a Visegrad Fund scholarship.
Yaryna Shumska is an interdisciplinary artist, performer, curator, and lecturer. She graduated from the Lviv National Academy of Arts (LNAA). In 2013, she was awarded a scholarship through the Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage’s Gaude Polonia program. She co-founded the Department of Contemporary Art Practices at LNAA (2018). She has also co-organized and co-curated the School of Performance (2019), the online residency On Site and Performance Archive. Ukraine (2020), and the international festival Performance Art Days in Lviv, in collaboration with the Czech Festival of Naked Forms (2024–2026).
