Chasing Two Hares is a classic Ukrainian comedy directed by Viktor Ivanov and based on the play of the same name by Mykhailo Starytskyi.
About the Film
Svyryd Holokhvostyi, a barber with grand social ambitions but chronically short of money, sets out to secure a profitable marriage. He chooses the “foreign-educated” Pronia Prokopivna, whose dowry amounts to ten thousand rubles. At the same time, his heart “sizzles” for the modest beauty Halia. All of Podil and Kozhumiaky will witness the conclusion of this absurd love triangle.
For many years, the film was predominantly screened with Russian-language dubbing. Its original Ukrainian soundtrack was discovered in Mariupol and restored in the 2010s with the support of the Dovzhenko Centre.
The screening is part of The History of Cinema in Ukraine programme, curated by Daria Badior and Sofia Doroshenko.
