Programme

On the Marshes (2003)
Director: Maksym Surkov
Country: Ukraine
Studio: Inspiration Films
Producer: Svitlana Zinovieva
Runtime: 23 minutes

A surreal yet entirely documentary portrait of Stare Selo, a village isolated from the world by impassable roads, poverty, forests, and the marshes of Polissia. Its only source of income is cranberries.

From early autumn until the first snow, residents set out on long expeditions, gathering berries during the day and spending their nights around fires in makeshift shelters. Despite the apparent self-sufficiency of village life, their routines and livelihoods depend entirely on the harvest. The film observes people whose lives follow the rhythms of the marshes, revealing loneliness, sorrow, and inner strength beneath their daily work.
