Discussion ‘Beyond the Silence: The Socio-Political Dimension’

22 of March | 15:00
Lviv, 124 B. Khmelnytskoho Street

The international project Beyond the Silence focuses on the socio-political realities of different countries—Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Nigeria and Myanmar—and on stories that often escape the attention of major media outlets or, after a brief surge of interest triggered by a major news event, quickly fade from public view.

In the first discussion of the public program, we invite you to reflect on how to speak about complex and uncomfortable topics both within the country and to the outside world. How do we present ourselves to the world, and what do we consciously or subconsciously leave unsaid? What do others say about us—or, conversely, fail to notice? How do silence and a lack of information shape alternative perceptions of reality? What role do media and visual storytelling ultimately play in these processes?

Speakers:

Sasha Dovzhyk – Director of the Institute for Documentation and Engagement, INDEX
Volodymyr Sheiko – General Director of the Ukrainian Institute
Oleksiy Kovzhun – Media expert, political consultant, host

Moderator Iryna Starovoyt – Poet, essayist, Associate Professor at the Department of Cultural Studies, Ukrainian Catholic University
