Art out of the box. Talk about public art

Online discussion on the importance of public art for the public with the finalists and jury of the Banner Art competition.

22 December 2020

Participants of the talk – well-known experts in the field of culture: curators Lizaveta Herman and Mariya Lanko, art critic Bohdan Shumylovych, contemporary Ukrainian artists: Olena Subach, Pavlo Kovach Jr., Yuriy Biley.

Jam Factory Banner Art is a competition with the idea to create a work of contemporary art on a large-scale banner. The purpose of the project is to tell the public about the emergence of a cultural institution in the Factory of Jam through artistic work.

Openness is one of the main values of the Jam Factory. Public art is a tool for transmitting statements and opinions, which usually lack space in public space. The author’s concepts of the competition works were different: provocative, social, abstract. They provoked fierce discussions of the jury and, accordingly, different views on the final idea, which would best represent the values and ideals of the art center: criticism, freedom, openness, impartiality.

On December 22, together with the participants of the project, we discussed the strategies of creating a competition sketch, the statements that the artists wanted to convey to the community, as well as the importance of art coming out to the public. They jointly considered the intervention of art in public space, the role and possible dangers of this process.
