Broken Voices is a psychological drama by Czech director Ondřej Provazník about coming of age, power, and the boundaries of trust.
It is the early 1990s. Thirteen-year-old Karolína dreams of joining a prestigious girls’ choir, where her older sister already sings. Her talent quickly catches the attention of the charismatic and demanding choirmaster. At first, his special attention feels like recognition, but gradually Karolína finds herself in a situation where authority and trust become tools of manipulation.
Through Karolína’s story, the film explores the abuse of power, the vulnerability of teenagers, and an environment in which adult authority is rarely questioned. The film was inspired by a real-life case involving the Czech children’s choir Bambini di Praga, although it does not recreate specific events.
❗️Broken Voices was presented in the Main Competition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where it received the Europa Cinemas Label Award, while lead actress Kateřina Falbrová received a Special Jury Mention.
After the screening, we invite you to stay for a discussion, share your impressions, and reflect on the film together.
