About the film
Václav Havel — Czechoslovak dissident, the last president of Czechoslovakia, and the first president of the Czech Republic.
The documentary by directors Pavel Koutecký and Miroslav Janek, Citizen Havel, subtitled Scenes from the Presidential Kitchen, takes the viewer behind the scenes of Václav Havel’s political and personal life during his presidency. The former dissident is shown in a variety of situations — during political negotiations as well as in unguarded, everyday moments, such as when he gets frustrated over wrinkles on his shirt.
Director Pavel Koutecký began filming in 1992 and followed the life of the first Czech president for more than 13 years. The film captures key moments of Havel’s presidency up until his departure from office in January 2003.
