The film tells the story of Mustafa, a Crimean Tatar whose life is shattered after the death of his son in the war. Mustafa travels to Kyiv to bring his younger son, Alim, back home to Crimea, which the family was forced to leave after the 2014 annexation. His mission is to bury his eldest son according to Muslim traditions — a task that becomes the central conflict of the film.
The leading roles are performed by Akhtem Seitablaiev and Remzi Bilyalov. Homeward gained international recognition after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and was selected as Ukraine’s official submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. Notably, the film was shot in various regions of Ukraine, including Kyiv, Mykolaiv, and Kherson regions.
The film explores themes of family, loss, and cultural identity. Its uniqueness lies in the way it intertwines the personal grief of its characters with contemporary political realities, as well as in its visual style, which captures the atmosphere of rural Ukraine.
