Lecture by Vitaly Chernetsky: “The History of Cinema in Ukraine: The 1960-s”
About the Lecture
The curtailment of cultural autonomy, the dissolution of VUFKU, the arrival of sound, the Holodomor, and a shift in the cultural paradigm made the 1930s one of the most dramatic periods in the development of Ukrainian cinema.
On October 3 at 16:30, Jam Factory Art Center will host a lecture by Vitaly Chernetsky — literary scholar, translator, professor at the University of Kansas, and president of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in the United States.
We will explore Ukrainian cinema in a broader cultural context — its connections with literature, social change, and developments both within Ukraine and beyond its borders.
Vitaly Chernetsky studies Ukrainian and other cultures within global, interregional, and interdisciplinary contexts. He is the author of Mapping Postcommunist Cultures: Russia and Ukraine in the Context of Globalization. His forthcoming monograph, Crossroads and Breakthroughs: Ukrainian Literature and Cinema Between the Global and the Local, will be published by Krytyka.
Chernetsky also translates Ukrainian literature into English. His translations include works by Yuri Andrukhovych and Ostap Slyvynsky, as well as Sofia Andrukhovych’s novel Felix Austria.
