GANNA, one of the most vibrant singers and musicians on the European jazz and folk scene, presents the release concert of Utopia at Jam Factory Art Center on December 7!
TicketsIn 2013, GANNA began exploring and reinterpreting ancient folk songs from various regions of Ukraine. To create the Utopia album, she delved into archives and oral traditions of her homeland, traveling across Ukraine to record stories from grandmothers and grandfathers and document folk songs. Together with local researchers and musicians, she collected recordings from villages and the mountain slopes of the Carpathians, voices of grandmothers from Poltava, ritual songs from Kyiv, and fragments of everyday life, which she later reimagined through a contemporary lens.
The result is a vivid, dreamlike sound world where ancestral melodies merge with modern production, exploring themes of matriarchy, resilience, and belonging.
As GANNA says: “Ukrainian folk songs are part of my Utopia: a hope where my homeland and my culture can exist freely and peacefully.”
“Utopia sounds strong and uncompromising. And super contemporary. Bravo!” — ONUKA
