On March 30 and 31, we invite you to the educational program “Theatre That Has (Not) Lost Hope”.
This year, the program on the black box theatre will take place in three cities: Kharkiv, Lviv, and Kyiv. In their concept, curators Nina Khyzhna and Artem Vusyk draw attention to the current socio-political and theatrical context of the selected cities:
“Looking at the theatrical Kharkiv, which today suffers not only from enemy shelling but also from the prohibition of theatrical activity, we inevitably turn to a resource such as active hope. It seems to be the only way to endure, to stand firm, to resist demoralization and frustration, and to keep doing our work against all odds. Every day we must find the strength to take small yet historically important steps toward building a conscious theatrical environment: one that is ready to enter the realm of critical thought, political and socially responsible art.”
PROGRAM EVENTS IN KHARKIV
March 30, 11:00 – Workshop by Liuba Ilnytska – YermilovCenter
Theatre always tells stories — both true and improbable. And each time it searches for ways to imagine, engage with reality, and transform life’s truth into stage truth. In this workshop by playwright Liuba Ilnytska, we will explore tools for working with material, context, and stage form in personal acting practice and in developing the idea/concept of a performance or performative event. We will consider dramaturgy as a structure of stage action rather than as a play’s text, and will apply devised theatre techniques — created collaboratively by all participants in the artistic process.
Liuba Ilnytska is a playwright and curator of the theatre program at Jam Factory Art Center in Lviv. Her focus is on themes such as collective memory, identity politics, and the socially engaged body.
March 30, 17:00 – Artist Talk with Oleh Stefan – YermilovCenter
Oleh Stefan is an actor at the Kyiv Academic Theatre of Drama and Comedy on the Left Bank of the Dnipro. He previously performed at the Kharkiv Academic Shevchenko Theatre and the Les Kurbas Theatre in Lviv. From 2000 to 2017, he was an associate professor and teacher of acting and stage speech at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. He has given master classes at universities and theatre groups in Ukraine, Poland, Germany, the UK, Norway, and the USA.
State awards: Laureate of the Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine, Honored Artist of Ukraine.
March 31, 16:00 – Workshop by Oleh Stefan – secret place
The aim of the session is to return to the fundamentals of acting, to explore the nature and behavior of the actor as an instrument in the act of creation. The theoretical part of the workshop will take the form of a dialogue with participants about the “basics of acting.” Practical exercises will include work with the body, sound, and psychophysical behavior. We will try out mimodrama and explore areas of space, attention, imagination, encounter, and contact.
Participation in the workshops is subject to selection based on professional level due to a limited number of spots.
