On March 28 at 16:00, a presentation of the Ukrainian edition of the book “Jonas Mekas. Conversations with Filmmakers”, published by ist publishing, will take place in the cinema hall of Jam Factory Art Center.
The event will combine a film screening and a public discussion dedicated to independent cinema and to the figure of Lithuanian-American filmmaker Jonas Mekas, often referred to as the “father of avant-garde cinema.”
As part of the presentation, the documentary Fragments of Paradise by K. D. Davison, devoted to the life and work of Jonas Mekas, will be screened. The screening will be followed by a discussion focusing on the director’s legacy and his influence on independent cinema and 20th-century art.
“Jonas Mekas. Conversations with Filmmakers” is a collection of spontaneous dialogues between Mekas and artists such as Andy Warhol, Susan Sontag, Agnès Varda, John Cassavetes, Stan Brakhage, and others. These conversations capture a moment when new cinema was just emerging and existed without established rules, large budgets, or guarantees of success.
The Ukrainian edition preserves the original design and layout created by Fabian Bremer and Pascal Storz in collaboration with the German publisher Spector Books. The design adaptation was carried out by artist and designer Ostap Yashchuk. The book was translated from English by Iryna Kurhanska, and the literary editor of the edition is Olha Petrova-Tseunova.
