Agnès Varda is one of the key directors of French and European cinema as a whole. Her Cléo from 5 to 7 is a breath of fresh air in the cinema of the 1960s. And Vagabond is a drama about a nomadic woman who lives on the road, rebelling against society and challenging its rigid norms.
Varda constantly experimented with form, remained attentive and empathetic, never avoided complex themes, and was deeply sensitive. “Emotion is intelligence” (L’émotion est intelligence), she wrote. There are hardly better words to describe her films.
