On March 16, Jam Factory Art Center will transform into a space of live groove, improvisation, and collective sound — we invite you to the Hip-Hop Jam Session.
Jam Sessions are improvised performances with minimal preparation: musicians agree only on a basic structure or introduction in advance, while the music itself is created here and now.
This time, we move away from the traditional jazz jam format with its complex harmonies and individual solos, shifting instead toward rhythm, flow, and collective interaction. The foundation of the evening will be a tight groove and shared energy inspired by the sound of Robert Glasper, J Dilla, and The Roots, where a jazz rhythm section naturally merges with hip-hop, neo-soul, and R&B.
How will the jam work?
The evening will be led by a house band — a professional jazz rhythm section setting the tone and holding the beat. The jam will be built around cyclical harmonic structures and hip-hop beats, allowing participants to layer instrumental improvisations, rap verses, or vocal parts.
Featuring on stage: Dj Shon and Zombo.
What can musicians expect?
- The focus is on groove awareness (pocket) and interaction between participants.
- The session is open to MCs, beatmakers, vocalists, and instrumentalists working within hip-hop aesthetics.
- Instead of extended solo performances, the emphasis is on creating shared loops and rhythmic patterns in real time.
What can listeners expect?
An underground party atmosphere with a continuous musical flow, deep bass, and groove-driven rhythms. An evening to move freely to the beat, connect with others, and experience how jazz organically blends into a contemporary urban sound.
Participation in the Jam Session requires prior registration.
Please note: registration does not automatically guarantee stage participation.
