Based on a true story, the film tells the story of 70-year-old Alvin, a retired veteran and farmer who lives with his daughter. One day, he learns that his brother has suffered a stroke and is not well. In order to reconcile with him before it’s too late, the gray-haired old man in a flannel shirt and cowboy hat, who has health problems himself, decides to take a desperate trip. Since Alvin doesn’t have a driver’s license, he chooses to travel by… lawn mower! Ahead of him are nearly 400 kilometers from Iowa to Wisconsin, the open spaces and fields of the Midwest, and the strangers who make this pilgrimage complete.
‘The Straight Story” is a touching road movie that stands out among David Lynch’s other films.
The music for the film was composed by Angelo Badalamenti, whose longstanding collaboration with Lynch has given us the soundtracks to Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks. The film competed for the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and Richard Farnsworth, the lead actor, was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor.
The film will be presented in English with Ukrainian subtitles. The screening will be followed by a discussion.
