Ecocide, Anthropocene, War: How Do We Talk About Nature?

Can we talk about environmental issues during wartime? Russia is waging war not only against Ukraine’s people and culture but also against its nature—destroying reserves, animals, and ecosystems.

On one hand, Ukraine is adopting laws that strengthen environmentally friendly approaches; on the other, the situation with the exploitation of nature in our country remains dire. This is compounded by the political perception of nature as a resource.

Can nature itself be an agent? How can we begin to think about nature and the human–nature relationship in a new, non-anthropocentric way? Can we plan Ukraine’s reconstruction with these new paradigms in mind, thus building a better future? How do activists, experts, and artists speak about this today?

We will discuss these questions with artist Yana Kononova and Andriy Andrusevych, Senior Analyst at the Resource & Analysis Center “Society and Environment”, on November 2 at 16:00. The conversation will be moderated by Daria Badior.
