Oleksandr Malyshev is a pianist and composer, a distinctive voice of the Ukrainian jazz scene. His playing is marked by refined taste, shaped through years of collaboration with leading Ukrainian jazz musicians. His background includes quintets led by Dennis Adu and Alina Zalozna, quartets with Kostiantyn Ionenko and Viktor Pavelko, as well as cross-genre projects such as D’Electro, Bitlo, and The Impressions Jazz Quintet. His compositions are often highly thematic, rich in subtle irony, and balanced with a thoughtful, serious musical language.

Malyshev’s latest project, Space Quintet (with an upcoming release of the same name), is the first part of the Taste & Space diptych. Oleksandr jokes that this quintet was “sent to him from space,” hinting at the remarkable and innovative playing of top-tier musicians. In fact, “space” here refers to another meaning — a sense of space itself.

Space Quintet is a space created by the ensemble both within and beyond the music — a space where it feels natural to spend time, and one you want to return to. It is also shaped by the places, people, and events connected to it.

Line-up:
Dennis Adu — trumpet, flugelhorn

Oleksandr Malyshev — keyboards
